The microbiological tests performed in a microbiological laboratory include a wide range of analyses related to the detection and identification of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites).

The main categories are:

  1. Cultures and antibiogram

    • Urine culture

    • Stool culture

    • Throat/cervical/nasal swab culture

    • Sputum culture

    • Wound or other fluid culture

    • Antibiogram (testing the sensitivity of microbes to antibiotics)

  2. Parasitological tests

    • Stool examination for parasites

    • Blood test for malaria, etc.

  3. Mycological tests

    • Culture for dermatophytes

    • Direct microscopy (e.g., from nails, skin)
