The hematological examination in a microbiological laboratory includes a series of basic and specialized tests concerning the blood and the function of the hematopoietic system.

The most common are:

Basic hematological tests:

  1. Complete Blood Count (CBC) or Hemogram

    • Red Blood Cells (RBC)

    • Hemoglobin (Hb)

    • Hematocrit (Ht)

    • Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV)

    • Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH, MCHC)

    • White Blood Cells (WBC) and differential count (types of white blood cells)

    • Platelets (PLT)

  2. ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate)

    • Marker of inflammation or chronic disease
